ATLANTA -- Atlanta Silverbacks assistant coach Brian Haynes has been promoted to head coach, the soccer club announced Thursday.
Haynes will replace interim head coach Eric Wynalda, who was brought aboard after former head coach Jose Manuel Abundis was let go.
"I already knew coming in that Brian was a very capable coach, and that is why I brought him here to Atlanta as an assistant," Wynalda said in a statement. "Over the course of the last month, however, I was amazed at how many things we saw eye-to-eye on, so I can say that the team is in great hands with Brian in charge."
Wynalda also cited the Silverbacks' recent win over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers as one of the reasons why Haynes was chosen; Haynes led the team to its 4-2 victory while Wynalda was away.
Haynes, 50, was born in Trinidad, and both played coached for the FC Dallas before coming to Atlanta in July.
"I'm very excited for this opportunity and I owe a lot to Eric for believing in me as a coach," Haynes said in a statement.
Wynalda works as a primary television analyst for FOX Soccer, but will remain with the Silverbacks as a team advisor, according to team spokesman Neal Malone.
