Ian Esplen: CBA Thoughts | Montreal Canadiens

Men can be competitive on any field of play, they dominate in a number of sports including ice hockey. Until recently though they were not real competitors in dance and freestyle figure skating, this has however changed with more men beginning to participate and compete montreal canadiens in figure skating alongside women. Women are also competing more in other styles of skating such as ice hockey as well. Most of the main ice skate boot manufacturers have realized that there are a number of different skate needs for different people. CBA Thoughts

I posted something along this train of thought on the boards yesterday and I just wanted to elaborate on it a bit more.

So, Gary Bettman says that teams are losing money and the system has to be fix in order to save teams. Ok, seems like a fair enough reason to lower the cap but I do have few problems with this statement.

My main issue is I?m not sure he is telling the truth about the loses and I don?t think the NHLPA does either, which is why you see them asking for a better explanation. Below is an interview Gary did with Ron Maclean a few years back. Gary clear says,? revenues have gone up for five straight years?.

So, everything was tickity boo in 2010, but two years later the average team is losing nine million dollars? Something doesn?t add up, either Gary was lying back then or he?s lying now. Which is it?

The other thing that caught my attention that didn?t really add up was the Buffalo Sabres spending for this upcoming season. During the last lockout, The Sabres were the poster children as to why the system had to be fixed. The argument was along the line of we have to level the playing field to help the Sabres and the other small market teams.

Fast forward a few years, and under the system that was designed to help keep the Sabres afloat, the Sabres are now planning on spending more than any NHL team. Wait, whaaaat? Add to that, the second highest salaried team is the Minnesota Wild. A team that was cry poor just a few months back.

Now I don?t blame either team or their ownership groups for going out and tossing their money around. In fact, I applaud them for spending what they need to, to have a good team. I also haven?t heard either team cry poor since they have signed their big name players (and they better dam well not).

No my problem isn?t with these teams, my problem is with Gary using the record loses these teams will make this coming year in negotiations. What are the chances that Gary strolls into the boardroom and points out both the Wild and Sabres are looking at taking record loses this coming season.

He?ll bark out, ?See Donald, we have to lower salaries, teams are scheduled to take 20-40 million dollar loses next year. The system has to be cut back.?

To which the NHLPA will reply, ?Ah, talk to your owners. If they don?t understand how to budget, maybe look into getting them lessons on it.?

See, I believe Gary when he says that teams are losing money, but I?m not sure it?s because of the CBA? The problem is the same reason most people run into debt. It?s because certain owners chose to live beyond their means and it hurts all the owners.

If I go buy a house, I don?t whine about the mortgage payment and say it has to be scaled back because it is cutting into my pizza money. No, I make sure the mortgage isn?t too much and I budget accordingly. Owners should be forced to do the same. If they are ok taking a loss, let them take a loss. If they don?t want to take a loss, then don?t spend the money on players.

The best way to resolve this in my opinion has been suggested on these boards many of times. That way is to get rid or lower the cap floor. I would be ok with scaling the cap back as well, but 12 million is simply too difficult for teams to get under in a couple of weeks.

A 58 million cap, under the old rules, means no team can be over 10% of it during the offseason. Seven teams are over that number (63.8 million) right now. Will those teams face any kind of punishment for being over the 10%? And what will that punishment be? Contracts being ripped up? Draft picks?

Secondly, under the old rules, players could not earn more than 20% of team payroll. Right now there are five players that would be over 11.6 million (20%) next year. Do we roll those deals back? And if we do, is it only those deals that get scaled back? I can?t see how it is fair for the Preds to have Weber?s deal rolled back a few million and not give the Lightning some kind of a break on Lecavalier?s deal.

That?s a wrap.

Ian
