Ang Lee's 3D 'Life of Pi' opens NY film festival

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Once considered impossible to make, the big-screen 3D adaptation of the bestselling novel "Life of Pi" opened the 50th New York Film Festival on Friday, marking another advance in digital filmmaking.

The movie's director, Ang Lee, hit the red carpet at the big-budget movie's world premiere, with the black-tie audience getting the first glimpse of the spiritual story of a boy stranded on a boat with a tiger. It kicked off the screenings of more than 160 films over 17 days at the New York festival.

One of the world's most respected movie showcases, the festival typically emphasizes the art of cinema by focusing on the best films from the year's European festivals rather than Hollywood-style premieres. But the event is still seen as an important step in gathering buzz as Hollywood's awards season gets going.

More splashy world premieres than usual are on this year's schedule, including "Sopranos" maker David Chase's film feature debut, "Not Fade Away" and Robert Zemeckis' first live-action film "Flight," starring Denzel Washington, which will close the festival.

"Life of Pi" uses computer-generated imagery to bring a cinematic feel to the tale of a Hindu boy who survives a shipwreck and gets stranded on a lifeboat for 227 days with a spotted hyena, an injured zebra, an orangutan and a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker.

It is director Lee's riskiest film to date, even after 2005's "Brokeback Mountain," for which he won the best director Oscar. That film generated controversy for breaking barriers about gay portrayals on screen.

The 57-year-old Taiwanese born-director told the premiere on Friday night the film took four years to make and he joked about learning the hard way the difficulties of making a film in 3D predominantly set in the middle of the ocean portraying a host of zoo animals.

"'Life of Pi' was such an incredible story I just couldn't help myself, I had to tell this story," he said to audience applause. "This was an incredible journey for me."

DIRECTOR FOUND NOVEL 'MIND-BOGGLING'

With a budget of nearly $100 million, the film that opens in November in the United States is considered one of the riskier holiday season films.

Early reviews posted on Friday were mixed. The Hollywood reporter called it "exceptionally beautiful" and appealing to diverse audiences. Variety called it visually stunning but lacking in dramatic tension and grit.

Lee told reporters earlier on Friday that he read the novel soon after its release in 2001, and found it "mind-boggling." But he added, "I remember thinking to myself, nobody in their right mind" would transfer it to film due to the technical difficulties of filming the story.

Spurred on by its spiritual message, Lee agreed to make the movie and saw 3D as the only way to realize it, even before "Avatar" in 2009 broke through as a box-office bonanza for 3D movies.

"Life of Pi" stars novice Indian actor Suraj Sharma, who was plucked from more than 3,000 hopefuls. The book's author, Canadian writer Yann Martel, said he never imagined the film adaptation. "It was cinematic in my mind but I never thought I would actually see it on the screen, that it would be too complicated to do," he said.

Other films looking to gain favor with critics and audiences coming off showings at earlier festivals include Michael Haneke's "Amour," Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's "Beyond the Hills," Noah Baumbach's black-and-white ode to New York, "Frances Ha," starring Greta Gerwig, and Chile director Pablo Larrain's "No."

0 comments - Real Life Husband RockStar Dad Blog!

In these upside down days of pre-manufactured "stars and starlets", who inexplicably gain fame for bad behavior, it's difficult for a young person to find quality role models in today's entertainment world.

A quick internet scan of the daily news inevitably brings multiple stories of terrible behavior by reality stars and music personalities. ?A quick scan of the songs currently being marketed as popular music inevitably leaves the listener's ears filled with obscenities and tales of debauchery.

Cimorelli, the marvelous sextet?of singing sisters, is staking their claim to Pop Music Royalty by doing all the right things. ?Raised in a loving two-parent home, this family group solidly stands ready to conquer the world by using their natural God-given talents to achieve success. ?Their wholesome approach to entertaining an audience is a quality that has been sorely lacking in the music business.

There is nothing pre-manufactured here...they are really talented, they are really dedicated, they are really grounded, and they are really sisters.

Cimorelli will win over the world the old fashioned way...by being real.

On my final day of Cimorelli Week, I am thrilled to present:

Christina Cimorelli!

Christina, as you grow more popular by the minute, what's the hardest thing about being a "Cimorelli"?

? - For me, it's probably the lack of a normal routine and schedule in my life. ?I am a very organized person and I love to have a schedule days, weeks, months in advance. ?With our career, though, that's impossible. ?I don't know what I'm doing tomorrow. ?It could change this afternoon!

What's the most surprising thing to happen to you since the 'THE CIMFAM EP' was released?

? - Getting nominated for Teen Choice Award! ?That was so insane.

You all make it look so easy to perform in front of the camera. ?Is it as easy for you to perform in front of a live audience?

? - Live audience is very easy for us because we've done years of theatre!

Any advice to overcoming stage fright?

? - My advice to people with stage fright is to do lots of theatre and perform as much as you possibly can even if you're terrified because it gets SO much easier each time! ?I used to be so scared and nervous and shy onstage but through my experience, I've become very comfortable. ?Also, PRACTICE. ?Practice, practice, practice! ?The more you practice, the more comfortable you will feel when you perform. ?Prepared = Confident.

On your approach to songwriting, you've said to "trust your instincts." ?Who else do you look to for honest feedback and direction when crafting an original song?

? - Whenever I finish a song, I show as many friends as possible. ?I love to see how they react to it and what really touches them. ?However, I really try to write things I like. ?If I write for others, it never turns out as genuine as I want. ?My best songs are the ones I just write for fun!

Outside of your family, who would you love to collaborate with?

? - Two people I would love to write with are Dr. Luke and also Max Martin. ?I think a Cimorelli collaboration with Diggy would be cool! ?Also, one with someone like Drake!

What's the most fun you've ever had with Lauren?

? - Probably every year on our birthday! ?We share a birthday, and it's in August, so it's always super summery and fun, and we always have a BLAST!

THANKS Christina!
It's hard to believe that you were ever shy on a stage, so your advice is wonderful.

Well readers...that concludes Cimorelli Week here on RealLifeHusband.com and I want to thank everyone that has stopped by to show your love. ?It has been a blast!
Please follow Christina on Twitter @ChristinaCim

THANKS CIM FAM! ?Your dedication to this group is an absolute joy!

THANKS CIMORELLI! ?I wish you wild success and I hope you always enjoy the ride.
Keep going and keep smiling...

I leave you all with a cool video of a song written by Christina and Lauren featuring the entire family! ?From 2008, here's the ridiculously catchy 'Delaney'...

Successful Online Business Ideas

There is not hard to come by online business ideas that are able to generate a steady income flow, allowing people to work from home and manage their time as they please. Some people are still quite skeptical when it comes to working solely on the Internet and obtaining increased profits with every month, when more and more traffic is registered by websites.

This may be due to the fact that they haven?t read the right guides to lead them towards building a successful online business. Moreover, nowadays there are tested programs that can generate sales and therefore high commissions for you. All people need is to choose the best software and luckily this website has succeeded in doing that.

If you have heard of people that have made hundreds of dollars in a matter of days and you are still wondering how they accomplished building such empowering online business ideas then this article will reveal readers the full methods.

Online Business Ideas ? Revealed Methods

The best online business ideas don?t focus their attention on people that already possess the entire technical package. Nowadays, there is no need for knowing how the Internet appeared because there are people that are willing to share their strategies, people that offer software programs and complete guides.

One great method in the field of online business ideas is CPA Affiliate. No investment is required and profits can be achieved even without you having to build a website. Income presents itself in the form of commissions, as high as 50% from each sale. The products are not yours, are from global companies which offer high commissions in order to convince people to sell for them. Their revenues increase and so do yours.

On the list of online business ideas we must mention eBay. Everyone has heard of this massive website but until now maybe you thought of it only as a place where you enter and buy the necessary products. From now on, buyers can become sellers, if they have the motivation. There is no better motivation than making money from home without too much effort. A small investment is required for auctioning products and then selling them to people from all over the world, a digital camera, and of course being connected to the Internet. If you read about people who have made money on eBay you would be surprised about how much money can be made from selling auctioned products.

Online Business Ideas Materials

Online business ideas are not rocket science and being truly successful is not like landing on the Moon. Following the right directions and taking advice from people that have actually generated income with the help of their methods is the path. These online businessmen present their methods step by step in affordable eBooks, one example being Money on eBay.

Those are some well spent dollars and even if you feel that for the moment the method is not suitable, you will feel no regrets because after all you haven?t spent a small fortune and learned nothing. Everyone should give it a try and build an online business and after that, in return, the respective persons will share their online business ideas with other people just as eager to make money working from home.

Catalysis: Optimizing water splitting

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Computer simulations of a metal-sulfide alloy unlock the secrets to designing solar-powered catalysts that generate hydrogen fuel from water.

Partnerships can pay off when it comes to converting solar into chemical energy. By modeling a cadmium sulfide (CdS)-zinc sulfide (ZnS) alloy with special computational techniques, a Singapore-based research team has identified the key photocatalytic properties that enable this chemical duo to 'split' water molecules into a fuel, hydrogen gas (H2). The theoretical study was published by Jianwei Zheng from the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing and his co-workers.

Chemists had already identified CdS and ZnS semiconductors as promising photocatalysts for water splitting. However, both came with a drawback related to the size of their so-called 'band gap' -- the energy difference between occupied and unoccupied electronic states that determine photo-activity. While CdS can readily harvest solar energy because of its small band gap, it needs a metal co-catalyst to produce H2. On the other hand, ZnS requires high-energy ultraviolet light to initiate water splitting owing to its large band gap.

Recently chemists had overcome these problems by alloying CdS and ZnS together into a 'solid solution': a physical state where Zn ions are distributed homogenously inside the crystal lattice of CdS. Altering the proportion of ZnS in these alloys enables production of photocatalysts with tunable responses to visible light and high H2 evolution rates in water. Improving the design of a Cd-ZnS solid solution is difficult, because its underlying mechanism is poorly understood.

As a workaround, Zheng and his co-workers used a technique known as 'special quasi-random structures' (SQS) to mimic a completely random alloy with a series of small, periodic models. After carefully working to correlate experimental random hexagonal crystals with their SQS approximations, they calculated the electronic properties of the Cd-ZnS solid solution using hybrid density functional theory -- a computational method that gives accurate descriptions of band gaps.

When the researchers gradually increased the Zn content of their model alloy, they saw that the band gap deviated from a linear combination of the two components. This effect, known as band 'bowing', arises from volume deformations within the Cd-ZnS solid solution and is an essential parameter for predicting catalytic solar H2 production.

Further calculations revealed that the alloy's high catalytic activity stemmed from obvious elevation of the position of unoccupied electronic states, and a subtle change in the position of occupied electronic states, as the amount of Zn increased. But to retain strong light harvesting capabilities and to avoid premature corrosion, the team proposes an equal ratio of ZnS to CdS for optimal photocatalytic water splitting.

FOSS Patents: Google loses appeal, continues to be barred from ...

A U.S. appeals court has dealt the latest setback, and the most important one to date, to Google's hopes that it could address Android's huge patent infringement problems through the abusive pursuit and enforcement of sales bans based on Motorola Mobility's standard-essential patents, forcing the holders of non-standard-essential patents violated by Android into cross-license deals or mutual non-assertion pacts. The noose keeps tightening and it appears to be only a question of when, not if, Motorola will have to extend a standard-essential patent license to Microsoft on truly FRAND terms.

On Friday afternoon by Pacific Time, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued its opinion dismissing Motorola Mobility's appeal of a preliminary injunction by the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington that enjoined and, after the appeal was just turned down, continues to enjoin the Google subsidiary from enforcing a couple of German H.264-related patent injunctions that the Mannheim Regional Court had granted in May. The preliminary injunction had been granted by Judge James L. Robart, the federal judge presiding over the Microsoft v. Motorola Mobility FRAND contract dispute in the Seattle-based district court. The Ninth Circuit has now found that Judge Robart applied the correct legal standard and did not abuse his discretion in barring Motorola from enforcement in Germany.

The appeals court's ruling follows a September 11, 2012 hearing in San Francisco and means that Google must wait until Judge Robart resolves the FRAND contract issues raised by a Microsoft complaint filed in November?2010.

A bench trial in Seattle will commence on November?13 and will result in a FRAND royalty rate consistent with the FRAND promise Motorola once made to the ITU, a United Nations standard-setting organization that played a key role in developing the H.264 video codec standard in which roughly 80% of all digital video is encoded these days. Google does not want Judge Robart to resolve this contract issue as planned because it knows that its entire SEP enforcement effort against Microsoft would be brought to an end. In the opinion on the preliminary injunction, the Ninth Circuit does not want to address Motorola's objections to Judge Robart's course of action, but it comes fairly close to formally endorsing some of its key elements:

"We emphasize that we do not (indeed, we may not) decide whether the district court's partial summary judgment, or its determination that it would adjudicate a [F]RAND rate, was proper ? if an appellate court is to review those determinations, it will have to do so on a final, not an interlocutory, appeal. But we do hold this much: The district court?s conclusions that Motorola's [F]RAND declarations to the ITU created a contract enforceable by Microsoft as a third-party beneficiary (which Motorola concedes), and that this contract governs in some way what actions Motorola may take to enforce its ITU standard essential patents (including the patents at issue in the German suit), were not legally erroneous. Motorola, in its declarations to the ITU, promised to 'grant a license to an unrestricted number of applicants on a worldwide, non-discriminatory basis and on reasonable terms and conditions to use the patented material necessary' to practice the ITU standards. [...]"

"In particular, the face of the contract makes clear that it encompasses not just U.S. patents, but all of Motorola's standard-essential patents worldwide. When that contract is enforced by a U.S. court, the U.S. court is not enforcing German patent law but, rather, the private law of the contract between the parties. Although patents themselves are not extraterritorial, there is no reason a party may not freely agree to reservations or limitations on rights that it would have under foreign patent law (or any other rights that it may have under foreign law) in a contract enforceable in U.S. courts. [...]"

The Ninth Circuit opinion cites to different writings and decisions on FRAND, including several quotes from Judge Posner's recent ruling. It's clear that the Ninth Circuit gave a lot of consideration to FRAND issues and that it does believe FRAND promises must be honored. It is at least very skeptical of whether the pursuit of injunctive relief is legitimate in cases in which the defendant is clearly entitled to a license on FRAND terms.

The Ninth Circuit clarifies that its affirmation of Judge Robart's antisuit injunction does not imply that there is anything fraudulent about the process in Germany. The issue is not whether the Mannheim court did the right thing or the wrong thing -- it's that Motorola engaged in forum-shopping to gain leverage in Germany before the first-filed U.S. contract issue would be resolved. In practical terms, Motorola wanted to render the Seattle proceedings meaningless by gaining enough leverage in Germany that it could get a settlement on its terms before Judge Robart would even get to adjudge the case before him. Judge Robart made it clear that he wanted to thwart that plan, and the Ninth Circuit says that he had the right to do this.

By coincidence, I discussed this complicated situation yesterday, only a few hours before the Ninth Circuit opinion in a post on the fact that the Android camp is currently enforcing only one patent injunction against Apple and none against Microsoft. If you look at item?3 of that post, you can find more detail on the procedural history of the German H.264 patent injunctions that Motorola will most likely never get to enforce.

At the start of this post I was talking about Google's strategy for addressing Android's massive patent infringement. In light of this unsuccessful appeal to the Ninth Circuit, Google should think even harder about taking a license to all those Microsoft patents that read on Android. Google should ask itself, very seriously, whether it really has a workable plan to get away with wide-ranging unlicensed infringement.

Jay-Z christens Barclays Center with Brooklyn love

NEW YORK (AP) ? The newly built Barclays Center is the home of the Brooklyn Nets, and Jay-Z, an investor in the team, christened the venue Friday night in uniform, sporting a Nets hat and jersey as he rapped two dozen jams onstage in front of thousands.

Jay-Z performed for an excited and rowdy crowd of 18,000, wearing a jersey that featured his last name, Carter, and the number four. It was his first of eight shows at the venue.

As he emerged onstage, a video highlighting some of Brooklyn's historical moments ? like when it was named an official borough of New York City ? played in the background. There were also pictures of famous faces who were born in Brooklyn, from Michael Jordan to Al Capone to Aaliyah to Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys.

Jay-Z opened the show with the hometown anthems "Where I'm From," a song about his upbringing in Brooklyn's Marcy projects complex, and "Brooklyn Go Hard." He followed that with a tribute to one of Brooklyn's icons: the late Notorious B.I.G. He performed some of the rap vet's hit "Juicy" as the crowd joined in.

"Sing loud so he can hear you in heaven," said Jay-Z, who also held a moment of silence for the rapper, who was shot to death in 1997.

Another Brooklynite ? Big Daddy Kane ? made an appearance, performing songs like "Ain't No Half Steppin'" and "Warm It Up, Kane." He received a roaring cheer from the crowd when performing old-school dance moves with two dancers in all white.

Jay-Z said Friday's concert was incomparable to most of his other top-level performances, including the Grammys, Glastonbury or Coachella.

"Nothing feels like tonight," he told the crowd multiple times.

The audience was excited and wild, cheering on Jay-Z as blue laser lights beamed across the venue. A seven-piece band was placed a level above Jay-Z, who paced from left to right while performing jams like "Empire State of Mind," ''I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)," ''Izzo (H.O.V.A.)," ''99 Problems" and many others. Videos played on screens behind and above Jay-Z, while screens for fans in the higher sections ? though not large enough ? showed the rapper's performance on the left and right sides of the stage.

"I want to thank you, Brooklyn, New York City, for making me the man I am today," he said. "Like I said, everybody's from Brooklyn tonight."

A fan in the front section held up Jackie Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers jersey, immediately grabbing Jay-Z's attention. He asked the fan for it and said: "I promise I'll give it back."

"Brooklyn had their heart broken," he said as he held up the jersey and referred to the Dodgers leaving for Los Angeles after the 1957 baseball season. "We cried for so many years. ...Look how far we've come."

Jay-Z will perform at Barclays through Oct. 6 with the exception of Oct. 2.

But if the US and Mexico see eye-to-eye on their strategy to capture top druglords, they are increasingly at odds over other?facets of?the so-called "war on drugs."

The same day that "El Taliban" was captured, Mexican President Felipe Calderon spoke at the United Nations General Assembly, as did the presidents of Colombia and Guatemala, each questioning the American-sponsored status quo on global antinarcotics efforts.

?Today, I am proposing formally that [the UN]?carry out a far-reaching assessment of the progress and limits of the current prohibitionist approach to drugs,? said Mexican President Felipe Calderon.?

"It is our duty to determine ? on an objective scientific basis ? if we are doing the best we can or if there are better options to combat this scourge," Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said in a later speech at the General Assembly.?

And Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina said in his own talk that "the basic premise of our war against drugs has proved to have serious shortcomings."

These three leaders have been at the forefront of a new push from Latin America to question the decades-old American ?war on drugs,? as we detailed in a recent Christian Science Monitor cover story here.?

Latin America overwhelmingly bears the brunt of the violence around drug production and distribution, and in addition to taking to the international stage at the UN this week, leaders have tried tactics that range from calling for international bodies to change their charters, to urging an opening of debate on legalization, to kicking out American antinarcotics officials.?

Mexico's struggle

In Mexico, Mr. Calderon has struggled for his entire presidency against the historic violence that has left some 60,000 dead in drug-related homicides.

His administration has taken out top cartel leaders. The most recent arrest in San Luis Potosi of "El Taliban," whose real name is Ivan Velazquez Caballero,?marks the third arrest of a wanted leader this?month.

Mr. Velazquez Caballero allegedly has led a splinter group of the notorious Zetas gang, a divide that?officials say?is?likely behind recent surges in violence in parts of northern Mexico.?His arrest could lead to immediate calm, but as has happened in the past, it could also lead to further splintering and further bloodshed.

Both the Calderon administration and the US government have hailed?such arrests, and Calderon has reiterated that he will?never give in to drug criminals. "We won't cede an inch,? he said Wednesday.

But if those are words the US wants to hear,?he is uttering others that they'd rather not acknowledge. Calderon has long criticized, as he did once again this week, lax gun laws in the US that he says have armed criminals in Mexico. And he says that?as long as the US remains?a consumer country, there will be clear limits on the success of Mexican law enforcement.

What is clear is there is a growing consensus that what has been tried, thus far, is not working.

Can a plug-in change your politics?

Balancer / UW / Univ. of Mich.

The Balancer plug-in provides a cartoon character that indicates the balance of your browsing, from conservative red to liberal blue.

By Alan Boyle

If you were told that your online reading habits lean toward the conservative or liberal side of the political spectrum, would you seek out more diversity? Or would you stick with the sources who agree with your point of view? Inquiring researchers want to know ??and to find out, they've created Balancer, a free plug-in for Google's Chrome browser.

"The top question that I'm most interested in is, can having real-time feedback about your online news reading habits affect the balance of the news that you read?" said Sean Munson, an assistant professor of human-centered design and engineering at the University of Washington.

Balancer determines whether your reading diet is fair and balanced by recording your visits to websites on a "whitelist" of 10,000 news sources and blogs. Each website has a rating on the liberal-to-conservative spectrum, typically based?on previous research ? for example, the studies that University of Chicago researchers Matthew Gentzkow and Jesse Shapiro have conducted on media bias and slant. (One of their studies, from 2010, rated the San Francisco Chronicle as the most liberal U.S. newspaper and the Washington Times as the most conservative.) Munson developed ratings for additional news sources, based on the other websites they linked to. (Yes, Cosmic Log is on the list, along with every other news website you've probably ever visited.)

When the Balancer plug-in is installed, a button is added to the browser bar that shows you a cartoon character balancing a conservative-red and a liberal-blue block on a stick. The comparative size of the blocks serves as an indication of how balanced your news diet is. If the stick is tilted way to one side, the cartoon will suggest websites from the other side that would bring your score into balance.

Some of the participants will get the verdict from Balancer right away; others will have to wait for a month while the plug-in gathers control data. That way, Munson and his colleagues can gauge the effect of real-time monitoring.

Personality profile
There's one more data-mining twist: When you sign up for the plug-in, you'll be asked a set of questions about personality attributes: Do you consider yourself liberal or conservative? Are you the life of the party? Do you often forget to put things back in their proper place? The answers to such questions add a dimension to Munson's research.

"It's possible that different personality attributes predict reading behavior, as well as how amenable someone is to being persuaded to change reading habits," he told me. "We have found that some people do in fact seek out diversity, but there are also some people who are 'diversity-challenged' when it comes to online news reading."

The plug-in was developed at the University of Michigan, where Munson earned his doctorate, and works only with the Chrome Web browser. It misses out on anything you read via other browsers, including mobile apps. Funding for the project came from the National Science Foundation.

When Munson put his own reading habits to the test, he was surprised to find out how slanted his news diet turned out to be. So he's curious to find out how inclined other people might be to change their ways. "Even self-discovery is a valuable outcome, just being aware of your own behavior," he said in a news release. "If you do agree that you should be reading the other side, or at least aware of the dialogue in each camp, you can use it as a goal: Can I be more balanced this week than I was last week?"

Of course, most people probably think they're already fair and balanced, no matter how their political views look from the outside. So far, a few dozen people have signed up for the Balancer experiment, but Munson and his colleagues hope to sign up many more between now and the November elections.

Eventually, Munson's findings may influence the design of online search engines and recommendation websites. Today, your browser may ask if you're "feeling lucky." Someday, it just might ask if you feel like hearing a different opinion.

But wait, there's more:
By now, you're probably asking, "What about privacy?" A browser plug-in that keeps track of your reading habits and matches them up with your personality may sound like a big wet kiss for Big Brother. Munson's aware of the concern: He said the plug-in has been designed to anonymize all the data coming in, and will only keep track of the sites on the 10,000-website whitelist. Any other data ? including records of your visits to the naughty parts of the Internet???will go no farther than your own computer, he said.

"We did that partly to minimize the traffic on our servers, and also to protect privacy," Munson told me. "We've tried to collect as little data as necessary for the study."

Do you trust him on that? What do you think about the idea of tracking your Web browsing for research purposes? (Let's face it: That's being done all the time for commercial purposes.) And what do you think about the idea of fair and balanced news browsing? Feel free to go on the record with your comments below.

Bill Clinton to campaign for Obama in NH

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Bill Clinton will be back on the campaign trail on behalf of President Barack Obama.

Obama's campaign says the former president will hold an event in New Hampshire on Wednesday, the day of the first presidential debate. Obama and Republican Mitt Romney debate two more times in October.

In 1992, Clinton became the first Democrat to carry New Hampshire in the general election since 1964.

Clinton has become a key surrogate for Obama, particularly on the economy. He delivered a well-regarded speech at the Democratic Party's convention earlier this month, then made a two-day campaign swing for the president in Florida.

The former president is expected to hold more events for Obama in the campaign's closing weeks.

Three hundred killed in single day in Syria, group says

BEIRUT (Reuters) - More than 300 people were killed in Syria on Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, in one of the bloodiest days in the 18-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

World leaders meeting at the United Nations have expressed concern at the continuing violence in Syria but are deadlocked over their response to the conflict, which the Observatory says has claimed 30,000 lives since March 2011.

The British-based organization, which monitors violence in Syria through a network of activists, said in a report released on Thursday that 55 people were killed in rural areas around Damascus. They included at least 40 who appeared to have been shot in cold blood in the town of al-Dhiyabia, southeast of the capital.

Other activists have put the death toll in al-Dhiyabia as high as 107, blaming Assad's security forces for what they said was a massacre. Video published by activists showed rows of bloodied corpses wrapped in blankets. The victims shown on camera appeared to be male, from 20-year-olds to elderly men.

The Observatory also said 14 people were killed in a rebel bomb attack on a military command centre in Damascus and in an ensuing prolonged gunbattle between rebels and security forces.

Violence in Syria has deepened as the fight against Assad has became more militarized and the president has responded with increasing use of force - including regular air strikes and bombardments against rebel areas.

In the first nine months of the conflict, the United Nations human rights chief said around 5,000 people had been killed. U.N. officials have given up trying to monitor the violence but the Observatory's figures suggest five times as many people have been killed in the second nine-month period.

The Centre for Documentation of Violations in Syria, which is linked to the grassroots anti-Assad Local Coordination Committees, puts the overall death toll at 27,318.

Antipsychotic drugmakers target marketing dollars at D.C. Medicaid psychiatrists, study indicates

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The D.C. Department of Health (DOH) has released a study by George Washington University School of Public Health & Health Services (SPHHS) indicating the high levels of marketing by antipsychotic drug manufacturers to Medicaid psychiatrists in the District of Columbia.

Antipsychotics are one of the top-selling drug classes; In 2010, top antipsychotic manufacturers spent more than $25 million on marketing in Washington DC. Among 26 psychiatrists receiving at least $1000 from top antipsychotic manufacturers in 2010, 7 (27%) were Medicaid providers. Medicaid psychiatrists, however, received a disproportionate, share of industry largesse, receiving two-thirds (66%) of gifts and payments. In 2008 (the most recent data available),antipsychotic use by Medicaid recipients was especially high in the nation's capitol, with approximately 1 in 10 recipients receiving a prescription -- a rate five times higher than the total national population.

A large proportion of Medicaid recipients are children under the age of 18. Antipsychotics can cause sedation, weight gain, diabetes, and other adverse effects. Previous studies have shown a high rate of inappropriate off-label use (for conditions the FDA has not approved). Some adverse events may be more likely to occur in children and young adults.

Lead researcher Susan Wood, PhD, Associate Professor at SPHHS, said, "Pharmaceutical marketing affects which drugs are prescribed. Prescribing decisions can have a profound effect on both state coffers and population health."

"Antipsychotics are clearly being used in patients who are not psychotic," said Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, collaborator on the report and Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Physiology at Georgetown University Medical Center.

The report is in fulfillment of AccessRx, the District of Columbia's 2006 law requiring public disclosure of pharmaceutical marketing expenditures spent on all health care providers by every pharmaceutical company that markets in the District. The DOH's Health Regulation and Licensing Administration commissioned the study by SPHHS on the 2010 data. The amounts paid by antipsychotic manufacturers to DC Medicaid and non-Medicaid psychiatrists are included in the report, along with the effects of the new public records on prescribing and marketing trends.

Access to the report is available on DOH's web site, http://doh.dc.gov/node/158762

Dynamics of DNA packaging helps regulate formation of heart

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A new regulator for heart formation has been discovered by studying how embryonic stem cells adjust the packaging of their DNA. This approach to finding genetic regulators, the scientists say, may have the power to provide insight into the development of any tissue in the body -- liver, brain, blood and so on.

A stem cell has the potential to become any type of cell. Once the choice is made, the cell and other stem cells committed to the same fate divide to form organ tissue.

A University of Washington-led research team was particularly interested in how stem cells turn into heart muscle cells to further research on repairing damaged hearts through tissue regeneration. The leaders of the project were Dr. Charles Murry, a cardiac pathologist and stem cell biologist; Dr. Randall Moon, who studies the control of embryonic development, and Dr. John Stamatoyannopoulos, who explores the operating systems of the human genome.

The paper's lead author is Dr. Sharon Paige, a UW MD-PhD student who completed her Ph.D. in Dr. Murry's lab.

The results are published in the Sept. 28 edition of Cell.

Paige, an aspiring pediatric cardiologist, said, "By identifying regulators of cardiac development, this work has the potential to lead to a better understanding of the causes of congenital heart disease, thereby paving the way for therapeutic advances."

Previously UW researchers had examined the signals that prod cells to grow into various kinds of heart tissue. In this case, the researchers entered a relatively unexplored area. They decided to look at the genetic controls behind the transformation of stem cells into heart tissue.

Because stem cells keep their DNA code under wraps until needed, the scientists examined how this packaging is altered over time to permit reading of portions of the code and thereby produce changes in the cell.

DNA is wound up into a structure called chromatin. "DNA can be packaged as tightly closed, neutral or activated," Murry explained. The tightly closed state, he said, is analogous to setting the brakes on a car.

Like a child who clams up when asked, "What will you be when you grow up?" stem cells are protective of the genes that will determine their future cell type, or what scientists call their cell fate.

"We found that stem cells take great care to avoid turning on cell-fate regulating genes at the wrong time," Murry said. "These genes have their brakes on until they are needed." When the time is right, he said, "the brakes come off and the gas goes on."

He explained that the situation is different for genes that regulate cell functions, in contrast to those that regulate cell fate. Genes that control, for example, the production of proteins that allow the cell to contract or to generate electrical signals do not have such a complex braking system. Those genes can be more readily activated.

The researchers pointed out that it was already known that the patterns stem cells follow to modify their DNA packaging distinguished them from progenitor cells -- cells prepared to begin a lineage of a particular type of cell -- and also from cells that already had a working identity, such as blood or muscle cells.

However , the dynamics of the DNA packaging modifications -- how the packaging is programmed to change over time -- and how these dynamics influence which genes are "exposed" and activated to create, for example, heart muscle cells, was poorly understood.

The UW-led research team learned that, as human embryonic stem cells become heart cells, this differentiation is accompanied by distinctive dynamic alterations in DNA packaging. This tell-tale pattern enabled the scientists to distinguish the key regulators of heart development from other genes. The researchers referred to the carefully timed pattern of changes in the DNA wrapping as a "temporal chromatin signature."

Just as a bank robber leaves incriminating evidence in a handwritten note to the teller, the temporal chromatin signature gave the scientists the clues they needed to hunt down new genes that might be responsible for heart formation.

"We found a bunch of them," Murry said. Their system revealed the top candidate to be the homebox gene MEIS2. This gene seemed an unlikely choice because it had no previous record of participating in heart formation. However, when this gene was removed from a new generation of zebra fish, the developing fish embryos had heart tube formation defects and other heart abnormalities.

Murry and other members of the research team think patterns in DNA unwrapping could be broadly applicable to discovering the genes that regulate other aspects of tissue and organ formation beyond only the heart. Such a research approach might help reveal the major developmental decisions that occur inside of cells as an embryo forms and grows. These revelations could provide information useful to spurring stem cells to form specific tissues for organ repair later in life.

Acknowledging the limitations of a lab system in mimicking what happens inside living cells in the early stages of organ formation in humans, Murry said, "The use of the temporal chromatin signature to discover regulatory genes could give us new insights into human development and new tools to control cell fate."
