Indoor Tanning and Skin Cancer | Twin Cities Dermatology Blog ...

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., affecting more than two-million people annually. Unfortunately these figures haven?t stopped Americans from using tanning beds. ?They also haven?t stopped the tanning industry from targeting new customers.

Dermatologists have been examining the link between skin cancer and indoor tanning for nearly two decades, and despite a large body of condemning evidence, the tanning industry maintains that ?There is not strong evidence linking indoor tanning to skin cancer.?

Research has concluded that those using indoor tanning beds are 75% more like to develop melanoma (the most lethal form of skin cancer) than the general population. ?Recent research has shown that indoor tanning beds are a serious health threat, especially for younger consumers.

Similar to tobacco smoke, The United States Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization?s International Agency for Research and Cancer have classified UV radiation from indoor tanning beds as a dangerous carcinogenic.

After investigating tanning salons nationwide, a 2012 U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce report found that:

  • Almost all tanning salons denied the known risks of tanning beds
  • Eighty-percent of salons claimed that indoor tanning had health benefits for young people
  • Many tanning salons do not follow FDA recommendations on tanning frequency
  • Tanning salons target female minors in their advertising and marketing campaigns
  • Tanning salons use a variety of approaches to tone down the risks associated with tanning
