Chinese authorities seize 3,200 tons of illegal reprocessed oil

FBR Staff Writer Published 03 April 2012

Chinese authorities have seized nearly 3,200 tons of reprocessed oil, which was made from dumped animal fat and sold as edible oil. The police have arrested about 100 suspects for manufacturing the illegal oil.

The ministry has also shut down 13 underground workshops, which were involved in the oil manufacture. A report from China Central Television (CCTV) indicated that the oil was made using animal fat from slaughterhouses, which included rotten meat and animal viscera.

The ministry has announced to enhance its efforts to seize the illegal oil and safeguard food safety, reported Chinadaily.com.cn.

In 2011, the Chinese authorities had seized 'gutter oil', which was made by reprocessing waste oil from restaurants. Another food scandal which surfaced during the year included the addition of cancer-causing clenbuterol to pig feed to produce lean meat.

In response, the country had launched nationwide food safety campaign in August 2011 to curb such illegal practices.
