SF Weekend Planner: Good Food, Dive Bars, Truffles and Back to ...

EAT THIS
Jammers, picklers, butchers, bakers and other food artisans from 30 states and 1 Federal District are waiting until tonight to hear who will be winning recipients of the Good Food Awards at tonight?s sold-out gala event, but on Saturday, anyone can sample and purchases the award-winning delectable responsibly produced gourmet edibles at the Good Food Awards Marketplace at the Ferry Building. If drinkables are more your thing, don?t miss the accompanying Beer & Spirit Garden which will be taking place upstairs in the Grand Hall and will feature all the winning brews, spirits and cocktails. (Saturday, January 19 9 AM- 2PM, admission is $5 at the door, Beer & Spirit Garden 11 m- 2 PM, $15/person that includes general admission to the Marketplace).

LEARN THIS

Do you have a burning inner Julia Child or Jamie Oliver? If you?ve ever considered pursuing a dream of cooking (personally or professional), stop by the newly opened San Francisco Cooking School on Saturday afternoon, where they?ll be hosting a free public house. Check out their state-of-the-art-kitchen classrooms, meet the instructors, take in a cooking demo and get the new schedule of 2013 cooking classes. (Saturday, January 19 12-3 PM, 690 Van Ness Ave).

DRINK THIS

True, one doesn?t not think of dive bars and the Starlight Room in the same breath, but this Sunday, the swanky top of the hill cocktail lounge is taking things down and low with The Big Dive. We?re talking $2 PBRs and $5 for a whiskey shot with PBR chaser. It?s a $10 cover but free to the Starlight Room Facebook fans before 11 PM. They'll be a DJ spinning all night but no word if Harry Denton will be showing up in grunge wear. (Sunday, January 10 8:30 AM-1:30 PM, rsvp here).

SMELL THIS

Fungus freaks, this is your moment. The Napa Valley Truffle Festival gets underway today and culminates on Monday. Most of the big-ticket events are already sold out (drat), but there are still spots for Monday?s free festival marketplace and wine tasting event at the Oxbow Public Market, which will showcase local wine, a la carte truffle bites, cooking demos and a chance to win your very own black diamond (truffle, that is). Admission is free, $25 per person for wine tasting. Individual food and drink will also be sold separately. Proceeds to benefit the Napa Valley Food Bank. (Monday, January 20 10 AM-2 PM, tickets available in advance or same day at the door
