After South Africa won the toss and set Sri Lanka to bat, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara smashed his own record scoring 169 off 137 balls to set a formidable goal of 321 for the visitors.
South Africa in reply was all out for 140 in 31.5 overs.
All-rounder Thisara Perera proved well with the bat and the ball scoring 16 and taking three wickets. Rangana Herath took three wickets and Tillakaratne Dilshan returning from injury took two wickets.
Sangakkara was the man of the match.
The match debuted Dinesh Chandimal as the ODI captain since the Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews had earned a two-match ban for slow over rate at the final with India in the West Indies tri-nation series.
