Mistakes With The Energy Balance Philosophy For Dieting

If you have ever considered dieting, you probably heard that dieting is all about mastering an energy balance.? The advice is often along the lines that weight loss occurs when calories out is greater than calories in.? This notion stems from the First Law of Thermodynamics, which states Accumulation = Energy In - Energy Out.? Based on this scientific principle, nutritionists proclaimed that in order to lose fat, one must decrease the energy in (i.e. eat less) and increase the energy out (i.e. exercise more).? While this may sound reasonable, this logic has actually prevented many dieters from reaching their fat-loss goals.

First of all, I am not arguing with science.? Of course our bodies must obey the Laws of Thermodynamics.? But for many people, eating less does not help you lose fat.? Similarly, eating more does not guarantee you will gain fat.? After all, excess food calories can be stored as a gain in muscle, bones, tissue, fat, or a combination.? When you were a kid, you certainly consumed more calories than you burned in order to grow.? Those excess calories did not all turn into fat!? How do these nutritionists reconcile the calories-in calories-out mantra with everyday phenomena like growing?

Similarly, a deficit of calories will not automatically result in fat loss.? It could result in metabolizing sugars, muscle, or even your organs in order to meet the body?s energy requirements.? Plus, our bodies make it very difficult to maintain a caloric deficit.? With over 80% of the calories you burn going to basic metabolic functions, the extra calories you burn from exercise barely increases your daily calorie consumption.? For example, running for three miles may only increase the calories you burn by an additional 10%.? That is not much reward for all that effort.? In the meantime, your body adapts to the shortage in calories.

?Depending upon your exercise type, your metabolism could slow down, and you may end up burning fewer calories altogether than you did before the diet!?

This reason helps explain why most people will see weight loss for only the first two weeks.? After that, the body?s metabolism adapts to the current calorie consumption, and no additional weight loss is achieved without a further decrease in daily food consumption.? In response, some dieters keep cutting calories and end up on these starvation diets- just to see the scale go down!? Meanwhile, your body is metabolizing your muscles so that it can adapt to the lower food intake.? After dieting incorrectly, people will see their weight go down but their body fat percentage go up.

To sum up, is dieting an energy balance?? Yes, your body must adhere to the Laws of Thermodynamic, but this balance is much more complicated than when first examined.? In order to master actual weight loss, you must learn to regulate your metabolism the correct way.?
