When liberals talk about the health care exchanges included in the Obamacare law they sound positively free market. They tell us that the exchanges promote competition among insurance companies by giving health insurance consumers a sort of shopping mall where they can pick and choose companies and policies according to what works best for them.
The often compare it to travel deal aggregators like Travelocity or Orbitz, which might be apt except that Travelocity and Orbitz weren?t created by the government. They didn?t have to be created by the government because there is an actual free market in the travel industry. Plus, the government doesn?t have to force anyone to use Orbitz:
Washington D.C. small businesses are now required to buy health insurance plans through the government, despite complaints that it violates President Barack Obama?s promise that Americans can ?keep our health care insurance if we like it? under the Affordable Care Act.
Last Wednesday, The D.C. Health Benefit Exchange Authority (HBX) unanimously voted to require all businesses in the district with 50 members or less to purchase employee health insurance plans through the exchange, despite backlash from local businesses.
Remember, this is coming after President Obama promised that they?d be able to keep their existing health insurance under Obamacare.
Obamacare is health care policy so good Americans have to forced to participate.
What is particularly devious about Obamacare is that its proponents use the language of choice to support policy that is all about giving us fewer choices. The goal of Obamacare is to for Americans to buy health insurance in a government-controlled market where the only choices are policies approved by the government.
The problem with health care and health insurance in America, pre-dating even Obamacare, is that there was no market. Most Americans are not the customers for their health insurance policies, getting them through a third party (usually an employer). What we need to do is make Americans directly responsible for their own health care/health insurance, and then let the market service insurance customers in the same way it does for auto insurance and travel deals.
